Buckle Up: We’re Headed for Adventure (with a 6- and 3-Year-Old at the Wheel)

Tomorrow, I’m boarding a plane to Amsterdam — and I already know this trip won’t look like any other I’ve ever taken. Over the next ten days, I’ll be traveling through the Netherlands and Denmark with my daughter and two very special co-pilots: my 6-year-old and 3-year-old grandchildren.

Planning the trip has been a new kind of adventure. Designing an itinerary around the energy, curiosity, and attention span of two little ones required a different lens — one that looks for playgrounds, animals, hands-on museums, and snack stops every couple of hours. Thank goodness for AI — it’s been like having a patient, tireless travel agent helping me uncover a treasure trove of possibilities I might never have found on my own.

What’s surprised me most is how many of these “kid-friendly” experiences sound just as exciting to me as they will to them. We’ll visit the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem — not just for the masterful paintings, but for their world-famous dollhouse exhibit. I can already picture the awe in their eyes… and I have a feeling I’ll be right there with them, just as spellbound.

And then there’s Legoland in Denmark — the original one. I’m not sure who’s more excited about spending a day there: the kids or me.

But more than the places, what I’m truly looking forward to is seeing the world through their eyes. Watching the way a puddle becomes an ocean, a sculpture becomes a story, a city square becomes a playground.

This trip isn’t just about visiting two countries. It’s about slowing down. About savoring the small moments — the sticky fingers, the spontaneous dances, the endless questions. It’s about holding hands and being reminded of how magical the world really is, if we only take the time to see it.

I’ll be writing along the way — capturing the surprises, the laughter, the small (and large) adventures that come when you let 6- and 3-year-olds chart the course. I hope you’ll come along for the ride. Stay tuned — the adventure is just beginning.

  1. I can’t wait Neil. Looking forward to seeing both countries through your grandchildren’s eyes! What a fabulous adventure! Lucky you!

  2. Don’t miss Tivoli Gardens after which Walt designed Disneyland was patterned. Lots of history there in those rides etc. Spending most of a day there with our grandkids 2019 was fun.

  3. I remember taking my small children to a famous museum in Madrid with a great Renaissance exhibit. Erik asked: why are there all those pictures of that woman and her baby? Good luck.

  4. Thats wonderful, Neil. We await your tales-which will be exciting and interesting, and you will have memories to treasure. What lucky daughter and grandchildren they are to have a grandpa like you. God bless your trip with many happy memories.

  5. Just came back from taking our 7 1/2 year-old granddaughter to New York for five days. Super fun and emotional. I know you’ll have a great time. Please tell Kelsey hi for me. And please move my email address on your mailing listfrom the business one to the personal one below. I’m not sure how to do that myself.
